A minimum of 9 of the 24 units of coursework taken in the first 2 quarters of the program must be graduate courses in soil science. Students will be encouraged to take IAD 200 (Analysis and Determinants of Cropping Systems) and any other of the IAD courses as part of their preparatory coursework before their Peace Corps service.
Prerequisites: (number of units)
If prerequisites have not been completed upon entry into the program, the student must take classes for 3 quarters before departing in summer – Year 1 for Peace Corps service. Prerequisites are:

- General Chemistry (15 units)
- Organic Chemistry (6 units)
- Physics (12 units)
- Plant Biology or Microbiology (8 units)
- Introductory Soil Science (4 units)
