Global Horticulture Assessment
Global Horticulture Assessment
In September 2004, USAID funded UC Davis, the World Vegetable Center and a consortium of US Universities (Michigan State, Purdue and University of Hawaii), to conduct an in-depth, highly collaborative analysis of the opportunities and challenges for global horticultural development. The production of horticultural commodities, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and ornamentals, offers potential to alleviate poverty, meet domestic human nutritional needs, and stimulate growth in emerging economies of the world. The information gathered during this assessment will help to inform USAID's consideration of future investment in horticultural development activities.
The assessment was initiated with a synthesis workshop held at the University of California, Davis, October 18th and 19th, 2004. Three regional workshops will be held in early 2005 to provide local stakeholders with the opportunity to discuss and analyze the regional priorities for horticultural development and research in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Asia/Near East region. A comprehensive survey of horticultural experts, ministries, NGO's, industry, and producers will supplement the information gathered at the workshops and help to ensure that a broad range of input is included in the regional workshops and the final assessment.
